If you’ve ever heard about Montana weather stories, you’ve probably heard about the freak snowstorms in August, or the unusually hot day in May. Glacier National Park is known as the hiker’s paradise, as there are epic mountain vistas, stunning valleys, and diverse ecosystems. Whether you’re planning your hiking trip, or just wanting to explore, understanding Glacier National Park weather is essential for making the most of your visit.

Spring (March to May)

Weather Overview:
Spring feels like a never-ending season in the Glacier area. March and April can still bring snow and cold temperatures, especially at higher elevations. By late May, you’ll start to see more mild temperatures and the blooming of wildflowers, yet there may be days of random slush and snow. Going-to-the-Sun Road is not open to vehicles during this time.

Average Temps:

  • March: 20°F to 40°F (-6°C to 4°C)
  • April: 25°F to 55°F (-4°C to 13°C)
  • May: 35°F to 70°F (2°C to 21°C)

Summer (June to August)

Weather Overview:
Summer is the most popular season to visit Glacier National Park. Days are warm and nights cool down. Trailheads and roads are fully accessible starting late June, sometimes early July. Every year is different!

Temperature Range:

  • June: 45°F to 75°F (7°C to 24°C)
  • July: 50°F to 85°F (10°C to 29°C)
  • August: 45°F to 80°F (7°C to 27°C)

Fall (September to November)

Weather Overview:
Fall is my favorite season at Glacier National Park. The temperatures are cooler, and the autumn colors paint the landscape. By late October, snow returns to higher elevations. Roads and trailheads begin to close.

Temperature Range:

  • September: 40°F to 75°F (4°C to 24°C)
  • October: 30°F to 60°F (-1°C to 16°C)
  • November: 20°F to 40°F (-6°C to 4°C)

Winter (December to February)

Weather Overview:
Glacier National Park turns into a winter wonderland. Many areas are inaccessible, but you can still enjoy cross-country skiing, winter photography, and snowshoeing. If you enjoy downhill skiing, be sure to visit Whitefish Mountain Resort.

Temperature Range:

  • December: 15°F to 30°F (-9°C to -1°C)
  • January: 10°F to 25°F (-12°C to -4°C)
  • February: 15°F to 35°F (-9°C to 2°C)

Tips for Handling Glacier National Park Weather

  1. Check the Forecast: Always check the weather forecast for West Glacier or East Glacier before heading out.
  2. Dress in Layers: Be prepared for varying temperatures by wearing layers. Even in summer, mountain weather can be unpredictable. Pack a backpack with extra gear.
  3. Pack Accordingly: Depending on the season, ensure you have the right gear—waterproof jackets in spring and fall, sunscreen in summer, and insulated clothing in winter. Hand warmers and extra snacks are always a plus.
  4. Be Mindful of Wildlife: Remember that wildlife is active year-round. Keep a safe distance and respect their space.
