Glacier National Park recently reported a remarkable record-breaking visitation in September 2024. As most understand, vehicle reservations can restrict the number of visitors entering the park, allowing more traffic flow and potential parking. However, that ticketed-entry requirement was lifted on September 9th, creating a surge of visitor numbers.

Park officials reported that 602,902 visitors entered Glacier National Park in the month of September 2024. This recently compiled data also shows that 3,004,613 visitors entered Glacier National Park since the beginning of the year. This is the most visitors recorded since 2017.
Additionally, this year’s data, so far, shows an increase of approximately 47,774 visitors since last year’s data.
It’s only natural this occurred. September’s weather was amazing and comparable to August weather. August’s visitor data shows that 749,834 visitors entered Glacier National Park, again an increase compared to 2023.
Glacier National Park Vehicle Reservations
As we know, Glacier just finished its fourth consecutive season of requiring vehicle reservations for park visitors. For 2024, vehicle reservations were required for the famed Going-to-the-Sun Road (West entrance), the North Fork, and Many Glacier. As someone that frequents Glacier National Park, the reservations definitely push congestion away from popular sites. Although parking is still limited, I didn’t feel as overwhelmed as I have in the past.

When to Visit Glacier National Park
If you’re considering a trip to Glacier National Park, timing can significantly enhance your experience. The best time to visit is typically from late June to mid-September, as roads and trails are typically open. Late summer and early fall are particularly beautiful, with the changing leaves creating a spectacular backdrop.
For those looking to avoid crowds while still enjoying favorable weather, visiting in early September can be ideal (although early July is still my favorite). However, be sure to secure those vehicle reservations and plan to arrive early, as parking is still an on-going issue. You’ll get to experience some stunning fall colors without the peak summer rush.
