If you plan on adventuring the next few days, it’s essential to be prepared for the upcoming Yellowstone National Park weather. Here’s some ways to stay safe, as well as some tips to enjoy your Yellowstone trip when the weather is not cooperating.

Weather Forecast
In the next two days, Yellowstone is expected to experience a mix of weather conditions. This variance includes sunny skies, rain showers, and possibly snow, typical of upcoming Yellowstone weather.

What to Pack in Your Car
- Extra clothing
- Fleece or insulated jackets
- Rain jacket or poncho
- Hat/Beanie
- Gloves
- Sweatshirts/sweatpants
- Footwear
- Sturdy hiking boots
- Extra shoes
- Emergency Supplies
- First Aid Kit – include bear spray 🙂
- Flashlight
- Yellowstone Map
- Extra food and water
- Pack a cooler full of snacks to keep you full
- A thermos with coffee or tea 🙂
Additional Tips:
- Gas up your vehicle before entering the park.
- Drive slowly!! Roads may be slick due to the upcoming Yellowstone National Park weather.
- Check for road closures. Weather can impact road conditions. Check for current road conditions here.
- Keep a safe distance from wildlife.

Some tips to enjoy Yellowstone when the weather is not cooperating:
- Visit Indoor Attractions – visitor centers or lodges to escape the erratic upcoming Yellowstone weather.
- Explore Geothermal Features – bundle up and enjoy the steam!
- Scenic Drives
- Short Hikes – pack accordingly
- Wildlife Watching in Lamar or Hayden Valley
- Photography
- Relax in Lodges
- Find Ranger-led Programs
- Visit West Yellowstone and enjoy the local restaurants.
Please note that the Beartooth Highway (US-212) to Cooke City, MT is now closed for the season. It will reopen Friday, May 23, 2025, weather dependent.
The only road open year-round to vehicles is from the North Entrance at Gardiner, MT to Cooke City, MT (Northeast entrance). The remainder park entrances, and roads will close on October 31, 2024, to vehicles. Roads re-open starting late April-May, weather dependent.
